The end of chapter one should give the reader some idea of what the book will be about, whether we’re talking plot or tone or emotional impact.

It should ensure that the story hook has been baited and dangled in front of the reader. The End of the Chapter came as if new to me, though I remember having read all 9 volumes of THE FORSYTE SAGA in my late teens.

As compared to "The Forsyte Saga" and "A Modern Comedy", this last part of the huge trilogy has a feeling of modernity that I could not find in the previous two collections/5. At a minimum, chapter openers have a chapter number.

This minimalist approach is widely used in the design of fiction, where uninterrupted reading is the goal. This type of break lets the reader know there’s a change in location, a change in time, a change in viewpoint, or some other major change in the storyline.
